Brescia House learner Katie Cochran claims national equitation title at Kyalami
After finishing second last year, Katie Cochran and Luigi returned to the Sanesa National Championships to claim the open equitation title, with podium finishes in the 1.20m showjumping classes adding to her success.
Katie Cochran has reached a significant milestone in her equestrian journey after being crowned national champion in open equitation at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) National Championships held at Kyalami Equestrian Park.
The Grade 12 learner at Brescia House School also secured podium finishes in the 1.20m showjumping classes, capping off a successful competition that reflected years of dedication, teamwork and progress in the saddle.

According to Katie, the open equitation victory was particularly meaningful. “I was extremely proud. My horse, Luigi, and I have been competing at this level in equitation for two years and have had many podium placings.
However, this was our first win at a national level,” she said. “Last year we placed second in the open equitation at Sanesa Nationals, so this win felt like a true reflection of our progress and it was definitely a testament to the work we have done over the past year.”

Katie said her horse was particularly excited to compete that day as it was their first show back since the South African Youth Championships in July. She recalled having to keep him calm while sticking to the plan she and her team had prepared.

“It was not the most perfect equitation round that we have done, but our scores were a reflection of how we were able to adapt to unforeseen situations in the moment. It was definitely one of the most enjoyable equitation rounds that Luigi and I have done together.”
Katie’s success is built on a partnership with Luigi that spans three years. She believes the trust they have developed is central to both their competitive performance and enjoyment of the sport.
Her love for horses began long before she entered the competitive arena. Growing up in a family passionate about equestrian sport, Katie had the opportunity to ride from a young age.
Her mother and both her aunts have ridden throughout their lives, while the family owns a yard in Hartbeespoort where they continue to pursue their shared passion. Her aunt, Lauren Pretorius, has been her coach throughout her riding journey and remains one of her biggest supporters.
“I rode for many years at the family yard, simply just for enjoyment, before I started competing,” said Katie. “Those weekend afternoon rides when I was younger are what truly formed my love for this sport. I can confidently say that I definitely fell in love with horses before the sport.” Katie credits her support team for keeping Luigi in work when school commitments prevent her from travelling to the yard.
As she prepares to move to Stellenbosch next year to continue her studies, Katie said her competition schedule won’t be as busy and she won’t be able to ride as much. “However, riding will always be a part of my life.
I am very fortunate that my family is involved in riding and that it will always be there for me. I will continue to ride when I come home during holidays and hopefully compete every chance that I can.”
