Better Bryanston volunteers clear Winnie Mandela Drive and Sloane Street intersection

Community members tackle overgrown roadsides and litter in soaring temperatures to prepare neighbourhood drains for upcoming summer rains.

The Better Bryanston team braved soaring temperatures to clean up sections of Winnie Mandela Drive and Sloane Street, working to improve the appearance of the area and prepare roadside spaces for the rainy season.

Led by Better Bryanston chairperson Joyce Tshabalala, the team cleared overgrown vegetation and weeds, picked up litter and swept away accumulated soil along the roadsides to help rainwater flow more freely when the rains arrive.

The clean-up effort began along Sloane Street before the team made its way towards the Winnie Mandela Precinct in Bryanston, continuing its work despite the intense heat.

With the rainy season approaching, Tshabalala said the clearing of open spaces was particularly important, as vegetation could quickly become overgrown.

“This initiative is for the benefit of us all. We want to see a beautiful and far better Bryanston than we have,” she said.

“This is the time we need you to continue your support. Please donate any amount to help us sustain this wonderful initiative,” she added, thanking everyone who had supported the organisation thus far.

Community support needed

Beyond financial contributions, Tshabalala highlighted the physical demands of the work, particularly during periods of high temperatures.

“We are out in the sun; we’re burning. We would really appreciate even other forms of support, like water donations to keep us hydrated,” she said.

“You can also support us with equipment such as gloves and sun hats that are essential to make our way through.”

Better Bryanston chairperson Joyce Tshabalala urges the community to help the volunteers maintain their momentum and contribute towards a better-looking neighbourhood during a cleanup operation on Winnie Mandela Drive and Sloane Street on October 23, 2026.

As Better Bryanston continues its clean-up efforts, Tshabalala urged the community to help the volunteers maintain their momentum and contribute towards a better-looking neighbourhood. “Keep up the good work and help us to keep up the good work as well,” she said.
