The heart of a champion
In every community, there is someone who stands out above the rest. Benmore resident Val Stewart (87) is one such person.

IT was Val Stewart’s champion heart which secured her first place in this month’s Sandton Chronicle Champion of the Month search.
Stewart (87) has single-handedly knitted about 80 jerseys for the dogs and cats of the SPCA each year for the past 20 years.
Her prize is R1 000 in Hirsch’s/Pick n Pay vouchers which she donated to the SPCA to be used for the animals in its care, a further gesture of her innate generosity.
Commenting on Stewart’s crowning as champion, SPCA public relations officer Candice Scorer said, “The SPCA needs more Val Stewarts. It costs R300 000 to run the Sandton branch of the SPCA each month, including R30 000 just to run our mobile clinic.”

Lesley-Ann Oates, public relations officer of Hirsch’s Fourways, commended Stewart on her heartfelt work. “Through the campaign, we want to reward and recognise some of the extraordinary people in the area. Many people who do good are not acknowledged. We want to say thank you to these people.”
