Sailing up the clean Sandspruit

PAULSHOF - A portion of the Sandspruit River in Paulshof is a little cleaner.

Children attending a pony camp at Rivonia Riding Club in Paulshof took time out from grooming, feeding and riding ponies to lend a helping hand to cleaning part of the suburb’s green belt.

The nine children cleared litter from the banks of the river. They were not afraid to take off their riding boots and roll up their jodhpurs, to wade into the river to remove litter from the water. They managed to fill an empty dog food bag with rubbish. But it was not only hard work for the children. Once the river was clean, they sailed paper boats.

Many of the boats were pushed into the rocks on the side of the river and the children egged their boats on with cheers of excitement. In the end, it was Babette Swart’s boat who crossed the finish line first and Tayla Vester’s boat followed in second place. The game was all in good cheer to celebrate a cleaner river.

Rivonia Riding Club is committed to creating an environmentally cleaner and safer Paulshof. Rivonia Riding Club River Rangers are a group of volunteers who patrol the suburb on horse back and report municipal or crime problems to the responsible authority. They have become the key eyes and ears of the suburb.
