Sandton becomes high fibre zone

A growing number of businesses located in South Africa's so-called fibre zones are switching their internet connectivity from ADSL to fibre optic cables.

This according to Andre Joubert of MWEB Businessic.

Fibre zones are areas in which fibre optic cables have been laid, and are generally limited to high-density commercial areas.

Sandton is one such area.

“Within the fibre zones, uptake of the technology has been excellent with businesses showing a surprising willingness to pay for the benefits that fibre delivers,” said Joubert.

In areas such as Sandton that have been hit particularly hard by copper cable theft, many businesses have been turning to fibre optic cables because it has no resale value.

“However we are also finding that businesses simply want fibre because of the generally superior performance it delivers, being a symmetrical service,” he said.

This means that upload and download speeds are the same and usually consistent.
