Murder and harmful assault down in Sandton
SANDTON - The local crime statistics for each policing sector have been released by the South African Police Service.
This follows the announcement of the national crime statistics on 19 September.
The national statistics showed that murder had increased however, in the Sandton and Bramley policing sectors, this was not the case. In the Sandton policing sector, reported murder cases had decreased from 15 incidents 10 years ago to 10 incidents in the 2013/2014 financial year.
In Bramley, the number of reported murder cases had halved over a 10-year period from 18 incidents in the 2004/5 financial year to 9 incidents in the 2013/14 year.
Sexual crimes, assault with the attempt to cause grievous bodily harm and culpable homicide also decreased in the 2013/14 financial year.
Increases were seen in kidnapping cases, drug-related crime (which in the Bramley policing sector saw an increase from 66 incidents in 2004/5 to 352 incidents in 2013/14) and unlawful possession of a firearm.
