Councillor escalates resident’s running water complaint

MORNINGSIDE - Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp escalated Morningside resident’s running water complaint to Joburg Water’s general manager operations office.

This after the resident, Amanda Murray, was advised by Joburg Water to get a private plumber to fix the running water at the cul-de-sac off West Road North.

Eleanor Mavimbela from Joburg Water said Murray needs to get a private plumber to fix the leak as the Joburg Water team allegedly found out that the running water was from an internal leak and the entity is not liable to repair internal leaks.

“The water leak was reported to Joburg Water months ago,” explained Earp. “I can just imagine the frustration of the residents. How does the Joburg Water team know if it is an internal leak? The team going out to the sites are not experts. They conduct repairs and maintenance.”

He added that the teams that go out only locate the problem and repair. “They are just guessing,” said Earp. “Joburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency need to check properly to ascertain whether it is municipal water or underground water,” he explained. “Simply stating that it is an internal leak is simply brushing off the resident. These officials are failing in their service to the residents.”

Earp insists that Joburg Water must come back and test the water. He added that if the leak is not outside the property, it could be a leak from a neighbouring property or underground water. “If it is underground water then this issue falls under the responsibility of the roads agency,” said Earp.

He said Joburg Water’s general manager operations office needs to ensure that the local water depot fully investigates the mystery leak.
