What to do this weekend: Join the Jozi Cancer Warrior Walk to commemorate World Cancer Day #IAmAndIWill

JOHANNESBURG – Cancer is one of the major killers throughout the world including South Africa and to raise awareness, the second annual ‘One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk’ will be held at the Johannesburg Zoo to commemorate World Cancer Day (WCD) on 3 February.


Cancer is one of the major killers throughout the world including South Africa and to raise awareness, the second annual ‘One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk’ will be held at the Johannesburg Zoo to commemorate World Cancer Day (WCD) on 3 February. 

Every year the World Cancer Day (WCD) marked on the 4th of February, empowers individuals to take action, lend a hand to raise awareness of the global impact of cancer, to increase understanding of early detection, prevention, treatment and care.

The One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk participants will be able to visit a Wellness Village where food trucks and health information will be available.

Louise Turner, chief operations officer of the Breast Health Foundation, said the One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk and Wellness Village aim to pay homage and express solidarity with ‘cancer warriors’, those who are fighting or have fought, cancer.

The official hashtag for WCD 2019 is #IAmAndIWill.

“I am supporting the fight against cancer and I will walk on 3 February 2019,” said Turner. “We invite those whose lives have in some way been touched by cancer, or who simply wish to honour those who have been impacted by this disease, to join us for the scenic 4km walk through the Johannesburg Zoo.

“More than 100 000 South Africans are diagnosed with cancer each year,” she added.

“World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to raise awareness about this disease.”

The event will be held between 8.30am and 11am on 3 February at Johannesburg Zoo on Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkview. Gates open at 6am. Tickets are R100 per participant, tickets can be purchased through TicketPro online or at Edgars, Jet and SPARr stores prior to the event.

Gate sales will be charged at R130 per entry.

Funds will be used to support the Breast Health Foundation and the Cancer Alliance.
