Scholar of the law

SANDTON – University student Phomolo Khitsane is making great strides in his career.

Determined law student and Byanston resident, Phomolo Khitsane has become one of the only South Africans to join the Law Without Walls programme based at the University of Miami in Florida in the United States of America.

“The first two years of university was tough for me. I needed to get a grip on this law degree and so I started looking at what more I can do. When I did that, everything started changing, my outlook on life, and then I also started implementing the law in my everyday life,” he said.

The Law Without Walls programme is a collaborative model, spearheaded by the University of Miami School of Law. It brings together academic people from all over the world to explore innovation in legal education and practice for students. “My law degree became a lot more of a personal journey of self-development. When I saw this opportunity, I decided to grab it with both hands. When your eyes are open, you see things a whole lot more. I did my research and took a leap of faith and submitted my application. I was accepted in December last year.”

At the moment his sleeping patterns are all over the place but he maintains that it’s all worth it. “Every Wednesday is when I’m up at 12am to 2am where we have live webinars to discuss where we are headed, in the law and in the programme.”

The Wits student will be heading to Miami in April this year. On his return from the programme, he would like to complete his articles and be a motivational speaker at schools. “Later on, of course, I would love to venture into business, complete my articles and see what it’s like to be in a high-class level firm. Financial security is very important for me but my main thing is that I would just like to help people,” he said.

Law Without Walls is an annual programme open to all law students. The aim is, with the law, to realise the impact the changing world is having on shared legal enterprise and to embrace change to create resonant, efficient and sustainable futures.
