Buy a pink punnet, give a little hope
SANDTON – Together with the South African Mushroom Farmers' Association, Reach for Recovery aims to raise awareness and funds for underprivileged breast cancer survivors through its annual Power of Pink initiative this October.
Non-profit organisation Reach for Recovery would like to appeal to the community to assist in uplifting vulnerable breast cancer survivors.
Together with the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association, Reach for Recovery aims to raise awareness and funds for underprivileged breast cancer survivors through its annual Power of Pink initiative this October.
The fundraising initiative in conjunction with Pick n Pay will allow the community to support the organisation by purchasing a 250g pink punnet of mushrooms.
All of the funds raised from the punnets will give Reach for Recovery the financial power to drive its Ditto Prostheses Project which purchases silicone breast prostheses for women who can’t afford reconstructive surgery after the trauma of breast cancer.
“It is a life-changing gift of hope for a mastectomy patient as she can face life again looking ‘normal’ and feeling confident,” said Reach for Recovery Johannesburg chairperson Shirley Gottschick.
Volunteer Rita Mphokwane reminds us that breast cancer can happen to anyone – young or old – which is why learning how to do a breast self-examination is always so important.
“Breast cancer also brings harsh realities into your life,” added national Reach for Recovery chairperson Stephné Jacobs.
“[This] is a wonderful way in which Reach for Recovery can make a very real difference to the future of uninsured women who had survived breast cancer. Everyone who buys pink punnets of mushrooms in October brings that ‘ray of hope’ to survivors.”
