“In Grade 9 all the stars aligned for me and I received a scholarship from the school. Being here has helped me develop my cricket to a whole new level, to a stage where I can compete at the highest level. One of my teachers Mr Kroet is just one of the teachers who played a major role in the cricketer I have become now,” said Ash-lee.
He added that on this journey he had learnt to be humble and be the best version of himself through the sport.
“I started playing cricket when I was eight years old, I’m 19 now and the journey has been incredible. One major thing it has taught me is to never be afraid of being myself. When I’m on the cricket field I’m at my best, it gives me immense joy and freedom. Seeing kids who are learning how to play the game and who love the game is really touching.”
He mentioned that giving back through his wisdom and knowledge made him appreciate cricket even more.
“This year I’ve come back to coach and give back to a school that has helped me develop into the person I am today.”
Apart from a great school support structure, Ash-lee said without the support and motivation of his parents he would not be where he was today.
“We initially lived in Riverlea which is not the best area. My parents didn’t want me to fall into that lifestyle and so we moved to Roodepoort. Their sacrifice helped me, waking up every day at 4am taught me discipline and perseverance to reach my goals.”
Well on his way to reaching his goals, Ash-lee received a bursary to play cricket and study at the University of Johannesburg where he will complete a diploma in operations management.
Harvey mentioned that he is constantly learning and excited for his future in cricket.
