Curbing animal abuse this World Spay Day
SANDTON – World Spay Day is an annual initiative that highlights the importance of having animals sterilised.
Sandton SPCA celebrates World Spay Day with the community.
A team from the Marlboro-based SPCA spent the day on 23 February educating the Alexandra and Bertrams communities on how to best care for their pets as well as collecting some of the animals to take back to the Sandton SPCA clinic for sterilisation.
World Spay Day is an annual initiative that highlights the importance of having animals sterilised. “Our aim at Sandton SPCA is the prevention of cruelty to animals and one of the most important ways we can curb animal abuse is to ensure that animals are sterilised. Overpopulation is the main reason for abuse and neglect of animals,” said the SPCA’s Kathy Raffray.
According to the SPCA, one female cat can produce up to three litters of six kittens each in a year. This means that one unsprayed cat and her offspring can produce up to 104 976 cats in just three years.
One female dog can produce up to two litters of six to 10 puppies in a year. This means that one unsprayed female dog and her offspring can produce over 67 000 dogs in just six years. “As you can see, there are nowhere near enough homes for companion animals that are born. For every animal that we sterilise, we effectively save the lives of thousands.”
“Although there is much focus around the topic of sterilisation on World Spay Day, we at the Sandton SPCA know that far more sterilisations need to be done, more often. We therefore ensure that we routinely sterilise outreach animals in our clinic every Wednesday,” she said.
The SPCA will continue to work towards its goal of sterilising as many animals as possible in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted, abused and neglected animals.
