Youth encouraged to take a stand against climate change
LYME PARK – The Environmental Committee at St Stithians College would like to encourage more learners and younger children to get involved in creating awareness around climate change.
In an effort to raise awareness around climate change, the Grade 8 learners of St Stithians Girls’ College recently hosted a climate strike.
Co-supported by learners from St Mary’s School, the Student Environmental Committee encouraged the girls to wear green and create placards out of recycled material in support of the initiative.
According to the committee’s leader Jenna Kohler, it is extremely important to get young learners involved in the climate strike. “I think that it is important for our generation to raise awareness about climate change and making them realise to act now to preserve our planet for us and future generations.
“It also gave us the opportunity to collaborate with St Mary’s Waverly and other schools around the globe.”
Headteacher of the environmental committee Elana Shaw explained that introducing climate change to the Grade 8s and how they can affect their environment is a very important part of their journey at the girls’ college.
“Climate change is not something that will happen in the distant future but rather we are already facing it today. By being part of this climate march, I hope the students will be inspired to start making changes in their own lives and to those around them.
“Jenna would like to encourage more learners and younger children to get involved with the awareness campaign in any way that they can – just start.
“Even if it is just something small like always making use of recyclable bags and not plastic bags – it is a start. If many learners make small changes we can have a greater effect to the world around us.”
