Inspiring positivity in children
SANDTON – Shudu Finds Her Magic is available in an impressive six languages.
Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida can now add the title of author to her repertoire.
The Sandton resident recently released a children’s book, Shudu Finds Her Magic in an impressive six languages to inspire children to find a positive outlook in life.
Published by Jacana Media with illustrations by Chantelle and Burgen Thorne, the book is inspired by the 25-year-old’s childhood and the bullying that she experienced when relocating to a new province and a new school.
“The book is aimed at children aged between four and 12 years of age and deals with bullying and the power of friendship,” said Musida.
“I hope that youngsters will be able to see themselves reflected in the storyline and be able to take something positive away from it.”
Musida added that one lesson she hoped that children would take away from this book was that when something bad was happening to you, it was important to speak about it to an adult that you trusted.
“This could be a parent, a family member, a teacher or an elder. Remember that being bullied is not your fault, there is nothing wrong with you and nobody should have to go through what I went through.”
The book is available in Afrikaans, English, Sesotho, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.
The Miss South Africa Organisation and Jacana Media will be donating copies to Childline and South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), organisations who help children with issues like bullying and depression.
Musida is a well-known advocate for mental health awareness, working closing with South African Depression and Anxiety Group. Earlier this year, she launched her online mental health initiative #MindfulMondays on her Instagram in conjunction with the mental health group and Discovery Vitality.
“We hope that it [the book] helps teach children how to cope with bullying as well as about kindness and compassion and what it means to be a friend. Shudu has always wanted to make a difference and she certainly has,” said Miss South Africa Organisation CEO Stephani Weil.
