Paddlers complete the gruelling Two-Day Klip River Race

SANDTON – The winning K2 brought in father and son team Michael and Liam Stewart from East Rand Kayak in Benoni.

A number of paddlers took on the gruelling Two-Day Klip River Race from January 25.

The race was hosted by the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan.

The course journeyed from Daleside through Henley on Klip to Meyerton covering a distance of 33km per day with a 3km portage. The portage meant that paddlers needed to take their boats out of the water and run or walk a few kilometres before putting their boat back into the water again.

Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said, “The water levels were high and enjoyable but not as huge as the previous January. Nevertheless, the paddlers took the opportunity to enjoy the river race which would be used as a seeding and training race for the upcoming Dusi River Race – the world’s toughest endurance canoe race – from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on February 17 to 19.”

Following their successful finish at the Dabulamanzi Dambusters the previous week, U15 paddlers Nicolas Erwee and Luke Salmon of St David’s Marist Inanda finished as the first U18 team in fourth place overall in a time of 03:50:00 over the two days. Phineas Zulu and partner Neil Barrow finished 10 seconds behind the juniors.

The winning K2 was father and son team Michael and Liam Stewart from East Rand Kayak in Benoni with the Sowetan U23 paddlers Benjamin Mntonintshi and Wongama Makasi in second place.
