Local resident stuns in musical theatre show
Storm In A B Cup showcases the humorous ups and downs of a life treading the boards in the magical world of musical theatre
Local artist Kate Normington brought the love of musical theatre back to the Theatre On The Square.
The talented Inanda resident recently took to the stage for her musical revue Storm In A B Cup from April 21 to 30, leaving audiences wanting more.
Storm In A B Cup is based on an original concept by Rowan and Drew Bakker for Redhill School’s art festival three years ago, a humorous evening on the ups and downs of a life treading the boards in the magical world of musical theatre.

Directed by Russel Savadier, with musical direction by Rowan Bakker, Normington performs her showstopping numbers from Nunsense to Sister Act, Cabaret, Camelot, Into the Woods, Funny Girl and Hairspray, to name a few.
“It is a funny and light-hearted retrospective going back to old shows I’d done, some tongue-in-cheek memories accompanied by beautiful songs,” she said.
Normington added that the show encouraged redemptive ideas of love and hope; the predominating themes are about love, saying goodbye to lost loves, hello to the warmth of new ones and still being here having survived a pandemic in one way or the other.
“Sophisticated lyrics and melody reside in the chosen songs by stalwarts like Jule Stern, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim and Kander and Eb, their wary lyrics and haunting melody doing most of the work for us.
“These authors wrote about yearning, redemption, love and triumphing even in the most difficult of circumstances.”
Normington added that a large demographic of people who enjoy musical theatre will have enjoyed the production as its reminiscences about shows South African audiences have enjoyed locally and abroad.
“We have given them a different take and hope they will be revived in the hearts of the audiences.”
