Sandton Tigers fight it out for a good cause

The Sandton Tigers Cricket Club’s Smash and Bash tournament also raised funds for wildlife conservation.

The second edition of the Sandton Tigers Cricket Club’s Smash and Bash tournament was an all-round victory.

The annual tournament, which took place on May 7 at Hyde Park High School, saw eight teams go head-to-head for not only bragging rights but for the good of the cricket community.

The tournament helped raise much-needed funds to assist previously disadvantaged players in its junior cricket development programme.

“We help raise funds for [the juniors] to cover their expenses for the following season. Cricket is an expensive sport, we don’t charge them anything, and we rather look for sponsors and do fundraising,” said club chairman Jeremy Meiring.

A percentage of the funds raised will also be donated to wildlife conservation, paying homage to the Tigers’ name.

The Smash and Bash tournament follows a very successful season for the Tigers, with two of its team almost having won the league.

“This was a phenomenal result for a year as young as ours but we are more focused than ever to get back out there once again,” added Meiring.

Tigers now have their sights set on the inaugural Diadora Jozi Cup, a tournament aimed at community clubs. The T20 competition, hosted by Lions Cricket, will span across 12 age groups from U11 through to Veterans.

With 85 teams and over 1 200 players having entered this year’s edition, the cup is sure to be a showstopper.
