South African Depression and Anxiety Groups tackles stigma and inequality
Sandton-based non-profit organisation South African Depression and Anxiety Group eradicates inequality treatments for mentally ill patients through education and awareness.
It is evident that South Africa as a whole has faced decades of discrimination, unfair treatment and corruption.
Most individuals have not completely reached the healing stage of their trauma due to the stigma and the government. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group [Sadag] strives to address issues targeting mental health and highlights solutions.
Sadag is a Sandton-based non-profit organisation that prides itself with assisting individuals who are facing any mental challenges.
The organisation has been battling the stigma surrounding mental health and fighting for better resources in public clinics and hospitals. Education and the spreading of awareness has been the organisation’s main challenge of eradicating the negative connotation behind the subject.
The organisation compared treatment offered to patients with medical conditions [excluding mental illnesses] and saw an imbalance of benefits through medical aid schemes for patients who are mentally ill.
The trend of inequality through treatment can be seen in other countries as stated by the organisation. Although the majority of countries have not prioritised mental health, a few countries and companies have managed to change the approach of how mental health is being viewed: from improving health coverage in favour of mental health.
According to the support group, any changes in policies and legislation in favour of improving the access of mental health resources will add more expenses to various entities including the government.
Sadag predicts that through the change, more individuals will refrain from committing suicide and communicate more on their problems which will ensure recovery.
