Hawks Imposter from Sandton denied bail

A 42-year-old foreign national male from Sandton, facing charges of extortion, corruption and being undocumented, was recently denied bail in Pretoria.

A 42-year-old male from Sandton, who is facing charges of extortion, corruption and being undocumented, was recently denied bail by the Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crimes Court.

According to National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, it is alleged that the accused and his co-accused impersonated Hawks investigators from the Pretoria office.

“They demanded R300 000 to destroy a case docket that was opened against him [the complainant] and also promised to hand over a vehicle that belonged to the complainant as well as his refugee documents that were confiscated by the Sunnyside Police.”

The complainant reported the matter to the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Department in Germiston and investigations led to the arrest of the pair on March 10 at Time Square in Menlyn Pretoria.

The co-accused was granted bail during his second appearance in court on March 22, while the accused’s case has been postponed to June 3 for further investigations.
