Nathan to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games

Success in lifting goes hand in hand with hard work and mental fortitude, according to a local weightlifter.

Drawing inspiration from wanting to make his family and friends proud, Nathan Morris uses weightlifting to make people smile.

The powerful 25-year-old Morris of Pirates Performance Gym will be representing South Africa at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Despite only having been doing the sport for five years, Morris has been able to improve and fall in love with Olympic weightlifting. “I am very proud to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games. I am extremely excited for the challenge as it is my first time to test myself against some of the best in the world,” Morris said.

While he has been planning and training on his own, he said he has a great support system. His girlfriend and her family have played a huge role in helping him get ready.

“With just over a month and some weeks remaining, until the games start, I am currently training my hardest, putting in my best effort. I train five to six times a week, sometimes twice a day.”

“I want to inspire and be a role model for some lifters. I hope that watching me succeed in reaching my goals will help draw inspiration and push them to go for their dreams.”

To other lifters, he shared the following advice, “Try your best to be a good person first and a good athlete second. If you can go to bed proud of yourself today, success will come.”
