Like all years, 2022 was filled with its fair share of high and low moments that left people smiling and others sighing. Here are some of the stories which left a mark in our community – both good and in a not so good way.
- ‘Sandton Central comes alive as Joburg Pride takes over’
Sitting on the number one spot was the story which shared a valuable lesson that love prevails even in disaster. During the 33rd instalment of the Johannesburg Pride event on October 29, big smiles and rainbow flags were seen all over the Sandton area in honour of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, days before the event, reports of a planned terrorist attack around the area a quickly gained attention which nearly led to the cancelation of the highly anticipated pride celebration.
- ‘Israel’s most-wanted gang leader may be extradited’
In a bittersweet tale that occurred in the community of Bryanston, a group of an alleged Israel’s most-wanted gang were arrested on November 17, including the leader of the gang. According to Israeli authorities, the leader is part of a notorious gang dealing in drug trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities. As much as it brought shock within the community, it also gave residents a moment to praise the hard work of various police entities who successfully located and arrested the individuals.
- ‘Bunny chow champs celebrate spicy sweet victory’
Ending the list with a beautiful story, food loving partners Yogesh Babulal and Jamie Jane, defied the odds by winning their first best bunny chow of the town after competing in the annual Curry and Craft festival at Gold Reef City. Both based in Sandton, the founders of ‘A couple of Foodiez’ were shocked and delighted to hear the announcement that their first competition led them a rather spicy victory.
