Ward 90 councillor’s New Year regards to constituents

Martin Williams’ message to constituents for the New Year.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, while looking forward to 2024, took a beat to reflect on the year that was 2023.

In his address to his constituents, Williams praised active citizens and residents’ associations who have stepped in to fill many of the gaps in service that the City of Joburg is not delivering.

“I admire and appreciate those who are getting things done: pothole repairs, road markings, clean-ups of streets and public open spaces.

“If residents and their security companies don’t become involved, we’ll be more prone to outages resulting from cable theft and vandalism,” Williams said.

Williams encouraged residents to make their voices heard, through the official objection channels and via the media, where necessary.

“The voice of the people is necessary for the health of democracy,” said Williams.

Williams reminded that the upcoming elections were for national and provincial governments. He further noted that change is also needed at local government level, where elections are not scheduled until 2026.

“If Joburg waits until 2026, it might be too late. That’s why there is a call for the council to be dissolved so that we can have elections and a fresh start before 2026,” Williams urged in concluding.
