Tennis and bowls leagues underway in Bryanston

Tennis and bowling leagues are underway at Bryanston Sports Club.

Bryanston Sports Club’s athletes participated in tennis and bowls league matches at the club, undeterred by the blistering heat on February 17.

At the tennis courts, Beverley Bradley shared some background information on the club’s tennis league for women.

“The format of the day is two sets, and then you swop partners and play the other pair two sets. We’re effectively playing four sets,” said Bradley.
“We have four courts going this afternoon. The Bryanston Sports Club B team is playing against the Bryanston Country Club; and on these two courts it’s the Bryanston Sports Club C team playing against the Darrenwood team.

“The league is for five weeks,” Bradley concluded. “Every week we play against a different club, then there is a winner at the end when all the teams are rated.”

On the opposite end of the club, by the greens, teams of Johannesburg’s committed bowlers jockeyed for position, also unfazed by the scorching sun. Bryanston Sports Club bowler Tony Mazaris pointed out what keeps players coming back to the bowling greens.

“It’s a really good sport for everybody; we’ve got guys from the age of 10 to the age of 101 playing this game,” Mazaris said, who has been playing the sport since 1990.
“It’s a 95% mental game, and it still gives you good exercise – walking up and down. Most people, they always say ‘why didn’t I start this game sooner?’.”

Mazaris broke down the weekend’s event.

Yvonne Pickford’s love for the game exuded as she played.

“We’re playing a premier league game today. It consists of all the clubs from around the whole of Gauteng,” said Mazaris.
“We’re hosting the finals here on March 10.”
