How do you feel about the proposal to rename Sandton Drive after Palestinian activist Leila Khaled?
Thousands of petitions, both for and against, over the renaming of Sandton Drive were received by the City of Johannesburg. According to officials, the name will be changed, but what will they change it to?
Seitatole Dlamini: I am actually excited, and enthusiastic over this. We want to make it work. I feel it’s not only to represent Leila Khaled, but, also, to actually fight against genocide.

Leila Khaled’s history is tied to political activism and militancy, which could alienate many residents and visitors. Sandton should remain a neutral space, free from political statements.Sheila Molapo: I feel it’s the right course of action to take. The need for changes are visible, and if this street’s name is one of them, then the proposed name is one we can be proud of as a nation. I have no problem with Leila Khaled’s name being proposed: I support it.Liancer Lee: I think renaming Sandton Drive after Leila Khaled is not appropriate. Sandton has a unique identity that has always represented economic growth and prosperity in Johannesburg. Associating it with a controversial political figure might create division rather than unity.
