Brescia’s Potjie Day brings family flames and fun
Dads and daughters teamed up to cook, laugh, and connect at Brescia House School’s beloved Potjie Day, a treasured tradition that warms hearts as much as the fires.
The flames were not the only thing heating up at Brescia House School as the community gathered for the much-anticipated Dad and Daughter Potjie Day.
This is a beloved event that has grown into a celebration of generational connection, school spirit, and enduring memories.
Hosted by the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) on September 27, this year’s event once again proved that the real magic lies in more than just the cooking.

Dads, uncles, grandads, and family friends joined their Brescia daughters in preparing hearty potjies, but the main ingredient was clearly quality time.
The school’s head of marketing, Helga Bishop, said, “We’re not just here to compete, we’re here to connect. “Potjie Day has become a cornerstone event for us. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a first-time potjie stirrer, everyone walks away with full hearts and lasting memories.”
The school grounds buzzed with laughter, storytelling, and the aroma of richly spiced meals simmering over open flames.

While the morning was reserved for potjie prep, the event expanded into a full family celebration by midday, with moms, siblings, and friends joining in to taste, cheer, and vote for the day’s best dishes.
Adding flair to the occasion was a judging panel made up of experts from the Swiss Hotel School, along with celebrity chefs Chris Forrest, Chef Biggy, and Shane Mehlo, who kept spirits high with humour and praise as they evaluated each dish.
After hours of cooking and camaraderie, Team Kwa’Jobe was named Potjie Maestro 2025, while Team Vanessa and Gimbaz Delight secured second and third place, respectively.
Alongside the culinary competition were interactive games, activities, and shared meals, creating an atmosphere that highlighted Brescia’s commitment to values-driven community engagement.
“It’s these kinds of events that show what Brescia is all about,” added Bishop. “Togetherness, tradition, and turning small moments into something unforgettable.”
