Residents urged to respect fireworks by-laws

According to city regulations, fireworks are only allowed on specific days and within clearly defined timeframes.
Even during the festive season, fireworks are not permitted at any random time.
Christmas Day itself is not a designated day for fireworks use, although Christmas Eve is allowed from 19:00 to 22:00.
Other approved days generally fall between 19:00 and 22:00, with New Year’s Eve permitted from 23:00 to 01:00. Anyone found discharging fireworks outside the permitted times risks a fine.
Beyond noise disruption, many residents say they are deeply worried about their animals.

Loud bangs often cause distress, anxiety, and in some cases physical harm to pets who may panic, run away, or injure themselves trying to escape the noise.
Councillor Horwitz added that this emotional impact is part of why residents are becoming less tolerant of illegal firework use.
The city also reminds residents that it is illegal to set off fireworks near petrol stations, explosive factories, or places where animals are present, and strictly prohibited along public roads.
Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks activity to emergency services on 112 or 011 375 5911.
