Young actor takes on Pinocchio in Shrek The Musical Jr
Crawford International Sandton learner Kieran Moodley is living his dream on stage as part of the colourful cast of Shrek The Musical Jr at the Joburg Theatre.
For 12-year-old Kieran Moodley, performing on stage is more than just a hobby; it is a dream he hopes to pursue professionally one day.
The Grade 7 learner from Crawford International Sandton is currently part of the cast of Shrek The Musical Jr, performing at the Joburg Theatre. In the lively musical production, Kieran plays the role of the well-known fairytale character Pinocchio. He also appears as a Duloc civilian, and briefly as a fox during one of the musical numbers.

Although this is only his fourth stage production, for Kieran, performing already feels like the career he wants to pursue. “It makes me feel so happy. Drama is actually fun to do, and I would love to take it up as a career.”
Being selected for the production was a moment he will not easily forget. “I was so excited. Sometimes you just feel like you want to cry when you get the role.”
One of the highlights for him has been the dress rehearsals, when the full production comes together. “The costumes, the set, and everything together just make it so fun. You just have so much fun on stage.”
However, performing in a theatre production, while keeping up with schoolwork has not been easy. Kieran said rehearsals often run into the evenings, leaving him with limited time for homework. “You have to catch up on a lot of school work because you only get home around six.”

To stay focused, he has developed his own routine. “I put all my devices in another room so I don’t get distracted.”
Despite the challenges, Kieran says the experience has taught him valuable lessons about discipline and teamwork. He also credits the support of his fellow performers and the production team. “They are really nice and always hyping you up. They always say: ‘Don’t give up and chase your dreams’.”
