Captain Steven Dama has been serving as police for 25 years.

Sandton Police Captain Steven Dama shares his journey as a police officer to help his community to prevent crime

Captain Steven Dama was born and raised in a small village, Phiphidi, in Limpopo. He has been serving as a police officer since October 10, 1998.

According to Dama, at the beginning of his career, he used to work on the streets of Alexandra, doing a ‘Kangaroo court’ where he learned about protecting his community, he then decided to join the police force.

“After I joined the police force, we would hold meetings on how to protect our communities against criminals, that’s when my career took it to the top,” said Captain Dama. Now at Sandton Police Station for 23 years, the most challenging thing about being a police officer is when he goes out with his team to do a stop and search- the community becomes aggressive, especially when they search taxis, passengers become aggressive and swear at them and accuse them of wanting bribes.

“When we go out for a stop and search, we know which cars we are going to search, we search for suspicious cars not just any car we see on the road,” said Captain Dama

“I made a vow to myself that I will continue to serve and protect my community. I always pray when I wake up in the morning and ask God to continue giving me the power to serve my people,” said Captain Dama. He dedicates a lot of his time to ensuring children are safe.

Captain Dama also leads the Sandton SAPS Soccer team, his achievements so far:

  • He is the chairman of the team and established it in 2003
