A delicious treat in Costa Carastavrakis’s Desperately Seeking Souvlaki
“If you’re wanting to enjoy a fun night out, don’t miss Desperately Seeking Souvlaki at the Theatre on the Square this July,”
The show Desperately Seeking Souvlaki is an entertaining and hilarious comedy written and performed by comedian and author Costa Carastavrakis.
The show ushers non-Greek audience members into the circles of persons enlightened on the intricacies of Greek culture, strange superstitions and archetypal stereotypes and is directed by Renos Spanoudes.
Carastavrakis takes his audience on an amusing tour of being Greek-South African (or South African-Greek) that’s ‘as-advertised’, very not-suitable-for-YiaYia – Yia being the name most Greek people know their grandmothers by.
Several of Carastavrakis’s funniest quips are the segments where he reflects on coming out of the closest to his grandmother – who, eventually, comes around and accepts the idea of her grandson being gay, only to learn that he’s also dating a Zulu from KZN.
His witty performance is perfect for everyone looking to just laugh for an hour and a half, and return home in jovial spirits for having had their sense of humour titillated.
The show will be performed live on stage at the Theatre on the Square from 12 July to 16 July, according to the show’s publicist, Debra De Souza, who elaborated, “Desperately Seeking Souvlaki is a 70-minute show that takes the audience on a journey on what it’s like to be Costa, living in this world.”
“From hilarious gags about his upbringing to his dating escapades, Costa gets vulnerable not only showing the flaws in himself but in his community and South Africa. Such honesty, sharp wit and cheekiness means no one is safe and many parallels can be drawn between all communities in this country and this Greek condition that Costa highlights.”
Audiences will be mesmerised to learn Carastavrakis’s definition of souvlaki, with the show set to tour South Africa beyond these six shows in Sandton.
“If you’re wanting to enjoy a fun night out, don’t miss Desperately Seeking Souvlaki at the Theatre on the Square this July,” De Souza concluded.
Tickets are available at Computicket, or call the Theatre on the Square on 011 883 9606.
