Gareth Jordaan’s cooking passion in Sandton

A new chef based in Sandton says upcoming chefs should always cook with love and passion otherwise it is just a job.

Always offering a helping hand in the kitchen while his mother and grandmother cooked ignited Gareth Jordaan’s passion for cooking.

The 35-year-old said he was always in the kitchen with them, helping with cooking and, of course, licking the spoon when baking.

“Cooking is a passion; I do not see it as a job because if one loves what they do, they will never work a day in their life.”

As the Sandton Chronicle got to experience the new menu tasting at the Tradewinds restaurant at the Hilton Sandton; Jordaan emphasised that he is proud to be the executive chef of the Hilton Hotel Sandton.

“It is exciting and challenging every day is an opportunity to make magic happen. It is a big operation, and you always need to have your finger on the pulse. I enjoy every moment of it.”

He added that the new menu launch was fun, and exciting to have had the opportunity to showcase what he and his team are capable of.

“People’s reactions are where the reward or opportunity lies for us chefs; it was also great to explain to guests how each dish was made and to look at their real-face reactions when tasting the food.”

Jordaan concluded by explaining that he does not have the best dishes or a dish that defines his cooking skills, as food is like art to him.

“Experimenting with new techniques and flavours keeps it interesting for me.”
