Rethinking productivity with Larry Hodes

Local entrepreneur Larry Hodes says the problem isn’t laziness, it is misunderstanding productivity.

In an age of endless notifications, side hustles and rise and grind culture, many young people feel like they are always working yet somehow falling behind.

Local entrepreneur and coach Larry Hodes from Elton Hill believes the problem is not laziness; it is that many don’t truly understand what real productivity looks like.

“Productivity is so misunderstood, especially among young people. People think it’s about doing more. But it’s about doing what moves the needle and letting go of the rest.”

Hodes, known for running multiple businesses and mentoring local start-ups, developed his focus and flow method after burning out from the constant hustle.

He explained that his approach is simple but powerful, combining clear mindset shifts with practical habits like time-blocking, so one stays focused without working oneself into the ground.

“A key tool in my method is the focus and flow time-blocking framework, 50 minutes of deep work with short breaks and a morning momentum ritual that helps people start the day intentionally rather than reactively scrolling.”

Hodes added that young people today have more noise and more options than ever.

“So, clearing mental clutter comes first. No fancy software or apps can fix that.”

His advice is particularly relevant for young entrepreneurs just starting, as many try to juggle every task alone, jump from tool to tool, or compare themselves to others online.

Instead, Hodes urges people to build simple, repeatable systems, with rest included.

“Rest isn’t the opposite of productivity; it fuels it. If you can walk away with one rule, it’s this: focus on what matters. Everything else is a distraction.”
