Prom Me Up campaign supports Fidelitas learners’ Matric Dance dreams

Benmore Shopping Centre became a hub of hope as Fidelitas Comprehensive School students pre-selected their prom dresses and suits on July 5.

In a celebration of community, compassion, and youth empowerment, Benmore Shopping Centre hosted the Prom Me Up: Share Your Sparkle with Fidelitas campaign on July 5.
The event provided a special platform for Fidelitas Comprehensive School learners to select their prom (matric) dresses and suits.

This initiative aims to ensure that learners from Soweto attend their matric dance, which will be held on August 2, with confidence and pride, despite financial hardships.

The event is part of a larger effort spearheaded by Crawford International Sandton, which has partnered with Fidelitas for more than a decade.

Since its inception in 2017, the campaign has grown each year, emphasising the importance of community support in giving underprivileged learners a night to remember.

Crawford International Sandton teacher and project manager said, “A matric dance is a rite of passage, and while we can’t take away their struggles, we can give them a moment of joy and belonging for one night.”

The event was made possible by Benmore Shopping Centre, in collaboration with The Black Coffee Foundation, Epic Foundation, Crawford International School, and Boston Media House.

This year, makeup and pampering sessions were added to the list of support, helping learners feel special and celebrated.

Maharaj added that the partnership had allowed the initiative to expand its reach. “We only have what sponsorships provide, but this year, the support has been incredible, from dresses and suits to makeup and grooming.”

Teacher Marcus Mabunda, involved in the pre-selection process, shared the aim of the campaign. “It’s about more than just dresses and suits; it’s about giving these children a sense of dignity and joy. Our partnership with Crawford College and sponsors like Benmore ensures that these learners can enjoy their special night without worries.”

One of the learners, Tintswalo Baloyi, expressed her excitement and gratitude. “I never thought I’d be able to afford a beautiful dress for my matric dance. Thanks to this support, I feel confident and ready to enjoy my night with my friends. It means so much to me and my family.”
