Plastic surgeon set to deliver a powerful TED Talk in Sandton
Dr Kajal Lutchminarian’s upcoming TED Talk in Sandton is set to be a landmark moment, positioning her as both a medical leader and a thought leader.
The TEDx stage in Sandton will soon welcome Dr Kajal Lutchminarian, one of South Africa’s leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons, as she delivers her debut talk: How Women Can Reshape the Future.
For Lutchminarian, the platform is more than a speaking opportunity; it is a chance to challenge stereotypes and open conversations about how women see themselves and their power. “I want women to walk away knowing they can take ownership of their lives without sacrificing their authenticity. Strength and femininity are not opposites. They are allies.”

Often referred to as South Africa’s Barbie surgeon, she has leaned into the nickname, rather than shying away from it. “For me, Barbie is more than a doll; she’s an icon of versatility. She can be a doctor, a leader, an athlete, or an artist, and that resonates deeply with how I see womanhood.”
At her practice, Klutch Plastic Surgery, Lutchminarian has built an ethos rooted in empathy, precision, and innovation. Her approach is not just about surgery, but about confidence.
Her upcoming TEDx talk will centre on three themes:
1. Redefining strength: Showing that women can excel in male-dominated spaces without abandoning femininity,
2. Prioritising self-care: Reminding women that investing in themselves is not indulgent, but necessary for leadership and influence, and
3. Breaking taboos around plastic surgery: Urging greater awareness, education, and the importance of choosing safe, licensed professionals.
“These are conversations we don’t have enough in our communities,” said Lutchminarian. “Self-care is often dismissed as selfish, and plastic surgery is stigmatised, when in reality both can be tools for empowerment.”
Her own career path has been a balancing act of science, artistry, and vision.
With qualifications that include a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), a Master’s in Medicine, and a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Lutchminarian has combined rigorous training with a passion for reshaping, not just appearances, but perceptions of womanhood.
