Zumba with a purpose at the Silent Wellness Fest 2025

After turning personal pain into a powerful movement, Michael ‘MJ’ Julius is set to break records and uplift lives at the Silent Wellness Fest 2025 in Sandton, where music, movement, and mental health take centre stage.

Music and movement have always been more than just a pastime, but they have been a lifeline for Michael Julius, famously known as MJ.

In 2015, after a life-altering experience left him feeling depressed, he joined his first Zumba class, and that was the start of a beautiful journey.

What began as a hobby soon turned into a passion, sparking his journey to become one of South Africa’s most vibrant Zumba instructors. “Zumba fitness gave me a way to combine music and dance with fitness, but more importantly, it gave me purpose,” MJ said.

He said he realised he could help people feel good about their bodies, improve their mental health, and build confidence, all while having fun.

MJ’s classes are known for their light-hearted, party-like atmosphere. With upbeat music, simple to follow moves, and fresh choreography introduced monthly, he ensures every session feels new and exciting.

But what truly sets his sessions apart is the use of Silent Disco cordless headset technology. “Music is the heartbeat of Zumba. With Silent Disco, you immerse yourself completely, the music surrounds you, and the connection with others is electric. It’s like a fitness party where joy just happens naturally.”

For MJ, Zumba is more than exercise; it’s a way to heal and uplift. Over the years, participants have shared with him how his classes helped them through divorces, suicidal thoughts, and body image struggles.

Many say Zumba with him has become the highlight of their week. “Zumba builds confidence, reduces stress, and brings people together. You don’t need to be a dancer. You just need to move, smile, and let the music carry you.”

With his internationally acclaimed Que Like A Pro qualification, MJ ensures that participants of all levels, from beginner to advanced, can follow along with ease.

At the Silent Wellness Fest 2025, MJ is preparing to take Zumba to new heights, a family-friendly event with a bold goal: breaking the South African record for the most people at a Silent Disco Fitness Event. The bigger vision? Attempting a world record in 2026.

“This isn’t just a fitness event; it’s an immersive experience. We combine dance, breath work, and connection to create a space where people feel alive, confident, and more in touch with themselves.” MJ said.

He added that the energy at past events has been described as ‘top notch,’ earning five-star ratings from participants.

Families are especially encouraged to join; parents can take part while kids enjoy the designated play area, or families can dance together to make it a full-day experience.

MJ said the benefits of Zumba extend far beyond burning calories. “It boosts energy, helps create new neuropathways for the brain, and promotes graceful ageing. But above all, it’s about connecting with like-minded people and leaving the class feeling unapologetically confident.”

In a world where stress and socio-economic pressures weigh heavily, MJ believes events like the Silent Wellness Fest are essential.

“We need healthier ways to escape. Prioritising yourself means you can show up better at work, at home, and in your community.”

The fest will be held at Nubeginning studios in Sandton on September 28.

With the stage set for an unforgettable fitness celebration, all that’s left is for South Africans to show up, dance, and be part of history in the making.
