Residents demand accountability after long-standing road damage repaired in Illovo
The road is repaired, but residents in Illovo still want answers about why it took so long and why communication was lacking.
After months of frustration and safety concerns, a damaged section of Oxford Road in Illovo has finally been repaired, bringing relief to residents who had grown increasingly concerned about its condition.
The excavation site, located opposite Illovo Junction and near the entrance to Earlridge Flats, had remained unrepaired since October 2025, despite repeated complaints from the community.
Residents described the area as hazardous, citing broken tar, loose rubble and exposed infrastructure that remained visible for months.
Temporary barriers were placed around the site, but community members said the lack of visible progress created frustration and uncertainty.
“It has been like this since last year. Nothing was happening. It was dangerous for cars and pedestrians, and it made the area look neglected,” said resident Nolwazi Ndaba.

The situation has now changed, with the road recently reinstated. While residents welcomed the repair, many said the issue goes beyond the physical damage.
They want answers to the questions that were formally submitted to Johannesburg Water on February 12, requesting details about the initial excavation, the cause of the delay, and the timeline for repairs.
Residents also asked why communication had been limited during the months the site remained unrepaired.
In response to a follow-up query after the repairs were completed, the utility confirmed that it had received the questions and would respond within its standard timeframe.
“Your query is noted. We will respond within our standard turnaround time of 48 working hours, depending on the complexity of the matter and the input required from relevant technical departments,” the utility said.
