Morningside comedian Muhammed Latif is steadily establishing himself as one of South Africa’s rising comedy talents, earning recognition not only as a performer but also as a producer dedicated to growing the local comedy industry.

Latif has built a career that stretches beyond stand-up, producing comedy events, collaborating with some of the country’s biggest names and creating platforms for emerging comedians. His performances, centred on relatable South African experiences and everyday life, have seen him perform on stages across the country.

“Comedy has the power to heal, unite and inspire. If I can make someone laugh while giving them hope to chase their dreams, then I’ve done more than just perform,” said Latif.

He said his journey has been marked by several milestones. He was nominated for Top Online New Comedian and Funniest Comic Social Media Video at the 2020 South African Comedy Awards before winning the Beast of Bedfordview Comedy Competition in 2022.

In 2023, he was selected as one of the Top 20 Newcomers for the prestigious Savanna Newcomer Showcase.

Beyond performing, Latif founded The Horn Room in 2021 to create opportunities for local comedians.

He also produced the debut show of comedian Suhayl Essa’s Beginning Again Tour, produced Schalk Bezuidenhout Live in Zeerust, and, before Ramadan, produced Laaste Laugh Before the Fast in Cape Town, featuring comedians Simmi Areff and JamJam.

In 2024, Latif reached another career highlight when he headlined the Savanna Namibian Comedy Festival, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s emerging comedy talents.

Throughout his career, Latif has shared the stage with some of South Africa’s best-known comedians, including Jason Goliath, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Learnmore Jonasi, Robby Collins, Loyiso Madinga, Trevor Gumbi, Stuart Taylor, Dalin Oliver, Dillan Oliphant, Chris Mapane and Vafa Naraghi.

He has also performed at leading venues such as Theatre on the Square, The State Theatre, The Galloway Theatre, The Homecoming Theatre and the Theatre of Marcellus, among others. Despite his growing list of achievements, Latif said inspiring others remains one of his biggest motivations.

“I want young people to see that creativity, consistency and hard work can create opportunities. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but if you stay committed to your craft, doors will open.”

He concluded by stating that as his profile continues to grow, he is not aiming to make audiences laugh but also to help shape the future of South African comedy by creating opportunities for others while continuing to expand his own career.
