Wendywood karting sensation Kiaan Mahabeer eyes podium finish at Formula-K Raceway

The 14-year-old racer is sharpening his cornering and braking techniques as he prepares for Race 14 of the Sodi World Series Africa national championship in Benoni.

For Kiaan Mahabeer, every lap is a lesson and every race is another chance to become a better driver.

The 14-year-old karting sensation from Wendywood is gearing up for Round 14 of the Sodi World Series (SWS) Africa national karting championship at Formula-K Raceway in Benoni on October 18.

Having already made his mark in the championship and represented South Africa on the international stage, Kiaan is entering the next race with more experience, greater confidence and a clearer understanding of what it takes to compete at the front.

“I’m hoping to achieve a podium and have the pace to fight near the front,” he said.

But for Kiaan, success will not simply be about standing on the podium.

“A successful day for me will be clean races, consistency, getting valuable points, and most importantly improving from last time and becoming better than the driver I was before,” he said.

Kiaan’s progression has been built on more than raw speed. He said recent races have exposed him to tight competition, aggressive drivers and the importance of consistency.

Those lessons are now influencing how he trains. Rather than simply putting in more laps, Kiaan is approaching each practice session with a specific goal, whether it is improving a corner, refining his braking points or finding more speed.

“Formula-K is a very technical track; the biggest challenge for me will be the corner exits before the straights, because you have to carry a lot of momentum just to be quick on the straights,” he said. “Another big challenge will be racecraft.”

He added that by practising often and working on something new each session, such as improving a new corner or braking points, he will be prepared for the upcoming challenges.
