Ladies of Lavare take Sandton audiences on magical journey
Tammany Barton’s new comedy-drama brings laughter, heart and a touch of magic to Theatre on the Square as two sisters confront their past and rediscover their bond.
Award-winning actresses Shaeleen Tobin and Camilla Waldman bring humour, heart and theatrical magic to the stage in Ladies of Lavare, playing at Theatre on the Square until October 17.
Written by Tammany Barton and directed by Juliette Jenner, the comedy-drama stars Tobin as Maureen alongside Waldman as Vera. The story follows the two sisters as they plan Maureen’s birthday. When their plans go wrong, they find themselves trapped together in a bathtub in their retirement village while a birthday cake burns in the oven.

Instead of an ordinary celebration, the magical bathtub transports the sisters through memories of their past, present circumstances and imagined futures.
Along the journey, they confront their shared history, rediscover their bond and come to realise how precious time has become. Although ageing lies at the heart of the show, the production reaches beyond growing older to explore resilience, relationships, regret, hope and reinvention.
The packed opening-night audience responded warmly to the combination of comedy and emotional depth, with the story offering something both personal and relatable.

One of the audience members, Keisha Stewart, said: “It was funny, moving and wonderfully unexpected. The relationship between the two sisters felt incredibly real, and I loved the way the play moved between memories and the present.”
Another audience member, Nolwazi Mathe, praised the production for its message of hope. “I came expecting a play about ageing, but I left thinking about life, family and all the possibilities that remain at every age. It was entertaining, touching and very uplifting.”
Ladies of Lavare will be staged at Theatre on the Square in Sandton until October 17.
For audiences heading to the theatre over the next two weeks, the show promises an evening filled with emotion, laughter, joy and magical moments.
