Redhill teacher finds reward in learner growth
Former molecular biologist Imah Mwaba reflects on her transition to the classroom and her expanded leadership role as International Baccalaureate coordinator.
For Imah Mwaba, teaching extends beyond academic achievement to helping young people recognise their potential, develop confidence and make decisions about their futures.
Mwaba, who teaches biology and life sciences at Redhill School, began her career in molecular biology before working in research and university lecturing. She moved into high school teaching in 2021, bringing her scientific background and passion for education into the classroom.

“I have always taught, albeit in different ways, so moving into a school felt like a natural progression,” she said.
Expanding her impact at Redhill School
Since joining Redhill School, Mwaba has expanded her responsibilities beyond the classroom. She became the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator in July 2022, supporting learners and families with subject choices, academic challenges and preparation for life after school.
Her experience across research, higher education and secondary schooling has given her a broader understanding of the different ways educators can influence young people. Reflecting on her teaching journey, Mwaba said one of the greatest rewards was witnessing learners overcome challenges and grow into independent individuals.
“Academic achievement matters, but it is equally special to see a student persevere through a difficulty, begin to believe in themselves or make a thoughtful decision about their future,” she said.

Recent Teachers’ Day celebrations also offered Mwaba an opportunity to experience appreciation from the school community. She said the thoughtful gestures from parents and learners made the occasion special, giving teachers a chance to receive the kindness they regularly extend to others.
