Local judo stars shine

SANDTON - Students from the Tatami Judo club, many of whom attend schools in the Sandton area, excelled in the recent South African Judo Championships in Port Elizabeth.

Under the guidance of coach Sensei Basil Smith, they represented Central Gauteng at the event. Of the 25 judoka who qualified to attend the tournament, Tatami won 11 individual medals (four gold, six silver and one bronze) and nine team medals.

Sensei Smith, whose students respond to his positive outlook and reap the rewards of his enthusiasm on the judo mats, was extremely proud of these outstanding achievements.

The club was started in 2007 and is now one of the strongest clubs in Gauteng. Tatami players train on a Monday and Wednesday evening at Bryanston Primary School.
