Ryu Ken Chi Dojo Rivonia is back at it with martial arts session

The RKC Dojo Rivonia embarks on a journey of growth and mastery in 2025, with a focus on kendo, iaido, and jodo under the leadership of seasoned instructors.

The Ryu Ken Chi (RKC) Dojo Rivonia kicked off the new year with a highly successful practice session on January 11, specially designed for the senior members of the dojo.

The session, led by senior member Heinz Weilert, offered a comprehensive approach to developing skills in kendo, iaido, and jodo, under the guidance of experienced instructors.

The practice began with a warm-up and stretching routine to prepare the body and the mind for the intensive training ahead.

Participants then progressed to basic foot movements and striking exercises, which helped build control over both the body and the shinai (bamboo sword).

According to Weilert, these foundational exercises were followed by kihon (basic techniques), designed to enhance the participants’ striking abilities and engagement strategies.

“As the session advanced, the focus shifted to ji-geiko, a form of sparring that allows students to apply techniques in real-time, responding to both their actions and the reactions of their opponent. This provided an opportunity for students to hone their skills in a dynamic and practical environment.”

Weilert said that 2025 would be a year of continued growth and development for himself and the dojo.

“I am looking forward to further developing my kendo skills, while also improving my ability to instruct others. I need to support the growth of the club as part of the broader SA Kendo Federation.”

He concluded kendo, iaido, and jodo were all part of the traditional All Japan Kendo Federation and offered practitioners the chance to develop themselves across one or more martial arts in a safe and supportive environment.
