175 motorists arrested during the weekend for drunk driving
JOBURG – The drivers were detained at various Police Stations where they were granted bail of between R1500 to R2500.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) conducted multiple roadblocks around Johannesburg this past weekend (14-16 May).
A total of 175 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. According to JMPD’s spokesperson Wayne Minnar, motorists were stopped and screened at the roadblocks. “Officers conducted passive breathalyser tests on all drivers who were stopped and those who were above the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml were arrested,” he said in statement released on 16 May.
“The drunk drivers were taken to the JMPD Alcohol Evidence Centres and police stations where blood samples were drawn by registered nurses.”
The drivers were detained at various police stations where they were granted bail of between R1 500 to R2 500.
“Some of the drivers who managed to pay the bail were released and given instructions and dates to appear at the magistrates courts to face the mighty arm of the law.”
The courts will determine the fine or jail sentence for each driver. Fines or sentencing handed down by the courts vary with each and every case depending on its merits and the circumstances under which the drivers were arrested.
Minnar added that JMPD condemned this kind of irresponsible behaviour by motorists.
