VEREENIGING. – Vereeniging Police have opened a case after a man (48) and a woman (44) drowned in the Vaal River. Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says, “On arrival at the scene we were told by an eye witness that a BMW with two occupants was driving on the R 716 in a northern direction, on the wrong side of the road and flashing its head-lights.

Then the driver drove straight into the river. We are investigating the case.” In another case, a total of 31 people were arrested over the weekend.
According to Funda, three people were arrested for shoplifting, ten for drunken driving, five for possession of drugs, and one for stock theft.
Three were arrested for being undocumented, five for business breaking, four for armed robbery, two for theft of motor-vehicles and three for possession of suspected stolen property.

“In the same period we had vehicle control points where 131 vehicles and 237 people were searched. “We visited 24 ATM’s, 23 banks, 13 filling stations, 20 shopping centres, 10 schools, and 15 spaza shops. 500 fake DVD’S were confiscated,” Funda concludes.
