Hitch-hiker turned armed robber

A 23-year-old Sibusiso Mpanza appeared before the Balfour magistrate on charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm after robbing a motorist who gave him a lift.

It was reported that Mr. Sfiso Dlamini aged 26 was travelling with his girlfriend from Johannesburg to Vryheid on Thursday, June 16, when he picked up an African male who was hitch-hiking on the R23  near Heidelberg, while inside the car the Sibusiso told the driver that he was going to Balfour minutes later Sibusiso made a call, afterwards he demanded Mr. Sfiso who was the driver, to stop, Sibusiso then allegedly took out a firearm and pointed the driver demanding a cellphone and money, before jumping out of the vehicle.

Mr. Dlamini drove to Balfour police station to report the robbery, due to the quick response from W/O NJ Dlamini and Const. JS Thubana led to the arrest of Sibusiso Mpanza who was pointed out by the victim while still hitch-hiking at R23 back to Heidelberg, In his possession police found an unlicensed firearm with live ammunition, a cellphone and R 280

When appearing before Balfour Magistrate court on Friday, June 17, Sibusiso’s case was postponed until 2016-06-21 for bail application.
