On Thursday, 28 July, the Botle Ke Botho organisation from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development visited Kokosi to clean up unpleasant dumping sites in the community. The reasons for illegal dumping are numerous within some parts of Kokosi. The garbage truck that is supposed to collect the refuse does not reach some parts of the township and the residents are then forced to throw their garbage on open fields because there is not enough space in their own yards. Over time, these dumps have grown to become massive, smelly heaps that pose serious health hazards to the community. The executive mayor of Merafong, Maphefo Letsie-Mogale was also there to assist in cleaning Kokosi and brought the message of “re-use, reduce and recycle”. Residents were urged to keep their environment clean and tidy.
