A young girl, believed to be aged between six and eight, was killed this morning after she was hit by a  vehicle on the R512 near Lanseria, north of Johannesburg.

ER24 paramedics, along with another services, arrived on scene at 07h40 and found the body of the child lying next to the road while a light motor vehicle was found lying in a ditch.

Paramedics immediately assessed the patient and found that she had already succumbed to their multiple fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the young girl and she was declared dead on scene.

The driver of the light motor vehicle, a woman, was assessed and found to have sustained only minor injuries. She was treated for her injuries and thereafter transported to Life Fourways Hospital for further treatment.

It is believed the child was hit by a vehicle while walking to school. This vehicle then apparently fled the scene. A second light motor vehicle apparently swerved to avoid a collision, lost control and came to rest in the ditch.

Local authorities were on scene to investigate further.
