SASOLBURG. – About 10 prisoners and two prison wardens sustained injuries last week during an altercation sparked by late breakfast at the Sasolburg Prison.

It is alleged that prisoners complained about their breakfast being late, saying  that they couldn’t take their treatment as a result. Prisoners alleged that they were stabbed by wardens, adding that they now fear for their lives.

The Acting Deputy Regional Commissioner for the Department of Correctional Services in the Free State, Gustav Wilson has confirmed the allegations of  the altercation.

Wilson says, “A searching operation commenced at the Sasolburg Correctional Centre at the remand detainee unit.  Due to the searching operation, there was a slight delay in dishing out breakfast to the offenders.

“This caused an agitation among offenders in one of the cells and they pushed the food trolleys on the ground.  When officials attempted to restore order, the offenders retaliated by attacking the officials with sharpened objects and kitchen utensils.  Two officials and ten offenders sustained injuries.  All were taken to the external hospital to receive medical treatment.”
