Update: Sewage crisis in the Vaal – The Army makes good progress!
R2 million spent in 3 weeks - but results are already visible
VANDERBIJLPARK. – The SANDF Engineering Corps (and 1 Construction Regiment), ably led by Colonel Andries Mahapa, are already making good progress to repair the Vaal River System.
Col. Mahapa’s Engineering Corps has been deployed to the Vaal Triangle for 12 months to rehabilitate the Vaal River System, including the crippled water reticulation works and sewerage infrastructure in the area.
In order to do this the SANDF are going to have to transform Sebokeng, Leeukuil, Rietspruit and Meyerton’s waste water treatment works into sustainably operational plants again. On top of this, they are going to have to also get the 44 pump stations back to sustainable working order as well as repair some of the eroded reticulation networks. Not a small job by any means. However, they have already made significant inroads at Module 3 at the Sebokeng Waste Water Works – so if their decisive and swift actions here are anything to judge things by, they are on the path to success!
Currently 250 troups are working hard to meet the many challenges, with a 100 more members of the SANDF expected to arrive after Christmas, says Colonel Mahapa.
