I would have first said Happy New Year (2020), but I feel that I should leave that to the end and start with what currently preoccupies my mind which is the Matric results that came out on Tuesday afternoon. I’m happy and proud as a South African that the class of 2019 achieved a 3% increase from the 2018 class, but something has been ‘bugging’ me since the release of the results.
Is the country ready for the young men and women that will not have anything to do and loiter in the streets because of a lack of funds to enroll at the different institutions of their choice or because they were denied access to institutions due to their poor symbols even though they have ‘passed’ Matric?
Is the country ready for the masses that will be dependent on the already financially unstable households in our townships?
Is the country ready for the young men and women that, because of boredom, go astray and get involved in unlawful acts, then start using illegal substances and ultimately end up behind bars?
Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to be negative, I am trying to give you a realistic picture, a picture of what has turned our young nation into a nation of baby-makers, because young men and women in our townships need to receive a government grant to feed their families. There is also a realistic picture of young men and women who had a bright future while still at school and excelled in their studies only to end up being swallowed by the streets, smoking ‘nyaope’ and committing crime after Matric. I so wish that the powers that be had a programme in place for such.
Anyway, congratulations are in order for the class of 2019, you have made us proud. Best wishes in the New Year! I wish for you a better New Year than the previous one. I wish you this so that you fulfill all your New Year plans and that your wishes for the New Year come true.
I wish you much Success, Peace and Love.
