Communities urged to patrol to decrease crime in areas

Vereeniging Police Station Commander, Sonja Slabbert, has urged members of the community to form residential security patrols in their neighbourhood.

VEREENIGING. – Following a recorded increase in the number of housebreakings in the Rissiville area, the Vereeniging Police Station Commander, Sonja Slabbert, has urged members of the community to form residential security patrols in their neighbourhood.

Slabbert says this is a method that has proven to help decrease crime in both Sector 2, which covers Three Rivers, and Sector 3 covering Falconridge, van der Merweskroon, Sonlandpark and Arconpark. “By initiating residential security patrol, the community is making a forthright impact on the lessening of crime in their area.”

Police Spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda reports that police managed to arrest a total of 36 people for various crimes last week. “The crimes recorded include: possession of drugs, dealing in drugs, driving under the influence, shoplifting, possession of suspected stolen property, theft and common robbery. All the arrested people have appeared in Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court.”

Funda also reported that motor vehicle theft is still rife in Three Rivers, urging residents to put in place additional security measures. “People with dogs must always keep them locked in the yard so that they don’t attack innocent people walking on the street.

“We want to remind the community to report all crime activities anonymously to crime stop on 0861 10111 or report using the MYSAPS App. “Information will be treated with the strictest confidence.” Funda concludes.
